Farm Bulletin from Rob Mutimer

Monthly farm bulletin February 2012

SHEEP
The ewes have been pregnancy scanned to check if they are pregnant and if so how many lambs they will have. They are then sorted into groups for singles, twins and triplets to enable correct feeding. The majority of the lambs have been sold, the remainder are still grazing on the stubble turnips.

PIGS
Two new tents have arrived ... these are rather like small marquees, they house the piglets when they are weaned and during their grower phase. They have a sheltered area with straw which the piglets burrow into for warmth and an outdoor run which is their toilet.

CATTLE
Calving is progressing well, Justin and Mairi check the cows frequently, including late night checks and will help any cows which are having problems.

ARABLE
The last of the sugar beet are lifted and carted, Patrick is very pleased with the sugar content. The good weather is helping with drilling spring barley and Philip and Matt are finishing the winter maintenance.

Congratulations to Patrick and Claire on their engagement and the news that Claire is expecting a baby in July.
